Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) Funding Programs

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is administering 2 key funding programs aimed at supporting industrial decarbonisation efforts:

1. Powering the Regions Industrial Transformation Stream (ITS)

  • Funding Allocation: $400 million

  • Objective: Support existing industrial facilities in regional Australia to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with Australia's 2030 emissions reduction goals and the transition to net zero by 2050.

  • Scope: The ITS program supports a range of industrial decarbonisation solutions, including electrification, energy efficiency, low emissions processing, and fuel switching. Enabling technologies such as energy storage, demand management, and critical infrastructure supporting onsite decarbonisation may also be considered.

The ITS Program aims to:

  • Accelerate emissions reduction at industrial facilities in regional Australia, supporting national targets for 2030 and the transition to net zero by 2050.

  • Advance the commercial and technological readiness of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and electrification solutions that reduce scope 1 and/or scope 2 emissions or improve industrial energy efficiency.

  • Promote technology demonstration, cross-industry collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge across regions.

  • Enable workforce development by supporting the upskilling of industrial workers in emerging decarbonisation technologies and practices.

2. National Industrial Transformation Program (NIT Program)

  • Funding Allocation: $40 million

  • Objective: Support the reduction of scope 1 and scope 2 emissions at existing or planned industrial facilities across Australia.

  • Scope: The NIT Program supports projects ranging from studies to scale demonstration and deployment, focusing on technology solutions targeting industrial emissions abatement, including electrification, energy efficiency, fuel switching, and zero emissions vehicles. Enabling technologies such as energy storage, demand management, and critical infrastructure supporting onsite decarbonisation will also be considered.

The NIT Program is designed to:

  • Support industrial facilities across Australia in reducing emissions, aligning with the nation’s 2030 climate targets and long-term net zero goals.

  • Enhance the technological and commercial maturity of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and electrification solutions that lower scope 1 and/or scope 2 emissions or boost industrial energy efficiency.

  • Foster technology demonstrations, industry collaboration, and the exchange of knowledge across sectors and regions.

  • Build workforce capability by upskilling industrial workers in emerging decarbonisation technologies and practices.

Both ITS and NIT programs aim to encourage technology demonstration, collaboration, knowledge sharing across industries and regions, and support up-skilling of the industrial workforce in new decarbonisation activities.
